39-Year-Old Discovers Raisins Don’t Come From A Raisin Tree, Gets Mercilessly Roasted By Family And The Internet

December 24, 2025 by Deborah Bloomfield

Every day is a learning day, and we shouldn’t really mock people for learning something new. But a 39-year-old has recently told the Internet about his very recent discovery about what raisins are, and his family’s reaction to it.

“Today, aged 39, I found out that raisins are in fact dried grapes,” Reddit user p00shp00shbebi1234 explained in the CasualUK subreddit, asking others to share their own tidbits of knowledge they learned at a similarly advanced age.

“They do not come from a ‘raisin bush or raisin tree, or whatever’, as I had stated,” the anonymous source of grape facts added.

“I would be interested in finding out how much this has happened to other people, as right now my face is still as bright as the beetroots found on the Beetroot Vine, indigenous, as well we all know, to the Amazon rainforest.”

As explained by the original poster, raisins are not “from a raisin tree or whatever”.

“Raisins are essentially dried grapes of  the “Vitis vinifera” Natural Seedless varietal type and are typically dried by the sun, whether it is on paper trays or dried on the vine,” California Raisins explains.

“Once dried, the raisins are brought from the vineyards, stored in wooden bins, and processed as needed by having their stems and capstems removed, then sorted by size, cleaned and washed in water to assure a wholesome and safe final product.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 39-year-old’s family members were less than kind when they discovered this gap in their fruit knowledge.

“After my family had finished having a good laugh at me, they bantered with me about what a thicko I am,” they wrote, “and then they all laughed at me some more again.”

While some mocked the person further, writing “nobody tell OP about currants” (for a handy guide on raisins, sultanas, and currants, see our article on the topic) most others were kind to the middle-aged poster. Many posted similar experiences of learning the same thing, or other common facts at a later age.

We hope that made p00shp00shbebi1234 feel better. But they could have saved face mildly by pretending they were referring to Hovenia dulcis, aka the “raisin tree”.

Though it certainly doesn’t produce actual raisins.
