Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has said he believes ChatGPT will “change the world” on a similar scale to the advent of the personal computer. Let’s not forget, however, that Microsoft has poured heaps of cash into the development of ChatGPT and has some vested interest in its success.
Speaking to the German business newspaper Handelsblatt, Gates said: “Until now, artificial intelligence could read and write, but could not understand the content. The new programs like ChatGPT will make many office jobs more efficient by helping to write invoices or letters. This will change our world.”
ChatGPT is a free-to-use chatbot developed by OpenAI that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate human-like replies to questions and demands. The technology is based on neural networks, which mimic the underlying architecture of the brain to process information and learn.
“We’ve trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way,” its website says. “The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests. ChatGPT is a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.”
You can ask it, for instance, to write a poem about space pirates in the style of Tupac and it will do so in seconds (see evidence above). It’s so smart it was even capable of passing a US medical licensing exam.
However, it’s more than just a bit of fun. ChatGPT is one of the first effective systems of its kind that is easy to use and simply demonstrates the vast potential of AI to a wide audience. Through this, it holds the power to revolutionize almost every facet of society, from media and art, to business and science.
ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, but Microsoft has made large investments in the company. According to an announcement in July 2019, Microsoft invested at least $1 billion in OpenAI to develop their AI system.
Microsoft’s search engine Bing is also planning on using some of ChatGPT’s functionality on the platform.
The sensational roll-out of ChatGPT has proved to be a significant threat to Google’s supremacy. In a pushback against the upstart chatbot, Google announced their rival AI bot called Bard. Unfortunately, its promotional video didn’t go as smoothly as they hoped.
