April 12, 2021 by Jennifer Preston Leave a Comment

The Alzheimer’s Association has said a growing body of evidence says that by changing certain lifestyle habits, people might be able to reduce the risk of dementia. Experts have said that people need to adopt and combine some crucial lifestyle habits to get maximum benefits for their cognitive function and body. They have said that people should start eating a nutritious diet that consists of high amounts of vegetables and fruits. The diet should have a lower content of fat. Such a diet might be able to lessen the risk of cognitive decline, said the experts. Although there are not many studies that have shown a link between diet and cognitive decline, certain diets such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean DASH diets might be able to delay the onset of cognitive decline. Many past studies have shown a link between a history of depression and an increased risk of dementia. Therefore, if people are dealing with certain symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental issues, they should instantly seek professional advice, said the experts. Experts from the Alzheimer’s Association have said that people should as well learn ways and means to manage stress.

Scientists have said that people should stay socially engaged though it is hard in times of pandemic. However, staying socially active improves overall brain health, said the experts. People should pursue social activities that are important to them. They should find ways to be connected to the local community. If they love animals, they can volunteer at animal shelters. People should recognize their passion and share activities with their family members and friends to manage stress. Health experts from the Alzheimer’s Association have said that formal education plays an important role in people’s cognitive function. It helps reduce the risk of dementia at any stage of life, said the experts. People should consider joining local colleges, community centers, or online classes as per their interests. As per the report, risk factors for heart diseases and strokes such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes negatively affect people’s cognitive health. Therefore, people should take good care of their heart and lungs and they should quit smoking as well.

Many past studies have revealed that a brain injury might shoot up the risk of cognitive decline and dementia later in life.  As per the experts, people should avoid such brain injuries. They should wear a seat belt or helmet while playing contact sports or riding a bike. They should take steps to prevent falls that can lead to serious brain injury. Proper sleep as well is very crucial for overall cognitive health, said the experts. Scientists from the Alzheimer’s Association have said that not getting adequate sleep due to issues such as insomnia or sleep apnea might lead to many issues with memory and thinking. They have said that regular exercise as well is essential to maintain the overall health of the brain. People should engage themselves in daily cardiovascular workouts that will increase the heart rate and shoot up the blood flow to the brain and body. Many studies in the past have shown a potential link between cognitive health and physical activities. Experts have said that people should indulge in brain games as well. They should challenge their brain to keep their brains activated. Playing games such as building a piece of furniture, solving a jigsaw puzzle, doing something artistic, and playing bridge make people think logically. People should challenge their minds; it might have short or long-term advantages to the brain. Health experts have said that people should combine these habits to have maximum benefits for their cognitive health. They have said that it is never too late or too early to incorporate these beneficial habits into a lifestyle.
