What do you get if you cross a rockhopper penguin with a macaroni penguin? According to National Geographic’s new series, Secrets Of The Penguins, you get a “rockaroni”.
There’s been just a handful of documented sightings of these extremely rare hybrids to date, and they are one of several remarkable penguin spectacles captured in the new series that features National Geographic explorers Bertie Gregory and Dr Pablo “Popi” Garcia Borboroglu.
Narrated by Blake Lively, it includes some behaviors never-before-captured on camera, such as how emperor penguins prepare for their nerve-wracking egg exchange on the freezing ground by practicing with a snowball. The team was also the first to film a hidden cave colony of African penguins, and the incredible collaborative hunting strategies of Galapagos penguins mobbing pelicans.
For IFLScience, however, the rockaronis really left a lasting impression.
“Rockaroni penguins – hybrids between rockhopper and macaroni penguins – are extremely rare,” said Borboroglu to IFLScience. “These two species are closely related but typically maintain separate breeding behaviors and slightly different nesting habitats, even when their colonies overlap. For a hybrid to occur, both species need to be present at the same site during the breeding season, and a mating pair must form across species lines, which is uncommon. Only a handful of these hybrids have ever been documented, making them an unusual natural phenomenon.”
One of the imperfect measures of a species is their capacity to produce viable offspring, and while most hybrids are infertile, you do get some that can reproduce. This is why rockaronis could spell a new penguin species on the horizon (albeit it in the very distant future) if things keep going as well as they appear to be.
“One of the mechanisms by which new species can emerge is through hybridization — when two different species interbreed and produce offspring,” said Borboroglu. “In birds, however, this process rarely succeeds: eggs from mixed-species pairs often don’t hatch, and if chicks are born, they typically don’t survive or reproduce.”
“That’s why what we’re seeing with the so-called rockaroni penguins is so surprising. Not only are the hybrid chicks surviving, but they’re also reaching adulthood and successfully breeding – both with other hybrids and with individuals from the parent species.”
“The rockaroni penguins offer a rare opportunity to observe how evolutionary paths might shift and unfold in real time. It’s a fascinating development that expands our understanding of penguin biology and the potential for new genetic combinations in wild populations.”

The hybrid is a surprising one given the significant size differences between adult rockhopper and macaroni penguins, with macaronis being much bigger (but, to be fair, who wouldn’t fall for those eyebrows?). This means the rockaroni chicks come out larger than a rockhopper’s and demand more food, meaning more foraging trips for the parents. An energetically exhausting chick to raise, but one that could see these already resilient penguins become even greater survivors.
“Penguins like rockhoppers and macaronis survive in some of the harshest environments on Earth – enduring fierce winds, freezing temperatures, and challenging ocean conditions – and yet they continue to thrive,” said Borboroglu. “A hybrid like the rockaroni takes this adaptability to another level.”
“The rockaroni is a vivid example of how nature pushes boundaries and experiments with new possibilities. Penguins are truly an ocean of adaptation secrets, and these hybrids remind us how much we still have to learn about their biology, behavior, and evolutionary potential.”
