What Is Vaper’s Tongue?

February 21, 2025 by Deborah Bloomfield

With New York’s Attorney General recently announcing plans to sue vape distributors for “fueling the youth vaping epidemic” and “creating a massive public health crisis”, it’s worth taking a look at some of the potential side effects of vaping – one of which appears to be something called “vaper’s tongue”.

What is vaper’s tongue?

Vaper’s tongue is a reported side effect of vaping in which someone loses their sense of taste, either partially or sometimes completely, though typically temporarily.

We say “reported” because as of yet, there appears to be no published scientific research on the matter. Nevertheless, there seems to have been enough anecdotal evidence of vaper’s tongue that some dentists have taken to warning the public about it.

At the same time, it’s been suggested that irritation from the chemicals in vaping products, the dehydration of the tongue that vaping leads to, and flavor fatigue could all be playing a role in causing the loss of taste. However, because of the lack of scientific research, we can’t be certain about the potential role of these factors.

“There’s not currently reliable evidence to indicate how common the condition is or the mechanisms causing it,” Dr Benjamin Chaffee, a professor at the University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry, told Healthline. “This is another example of the many things we do not know about how vaping affects the body. It’s a reason for more research and a reason to approach these products with caution.”

How to get rid of vaper’s tongue

The absence of research into vaper’s tongue also means that there’s no truly approved way of treating it, but dentists have some ideas of what could help.

“First thing, stop vaping, or really cut down your vaping,” Dr Stewart Beggs, a cosmetic and restorative dentist, said in a video posted to TikTok. “Second thing, […] start to drink some more water, make sure you’re fully hydrated.” Beggs also recommends practicing good oral hygiene; that means brushing your teeth, cleaning your tongue, and yes, remembering to floss too.

Other side effects of vaping

Scientists are still investigating the potential side effects of vaping, but according to Queensland’s (Australia) Chief Dental Officer Dr Mark Brown, there’s a growing body of evidence that suggests it probably isn’t all that great for your oral health.

“It’s not only tobacco smoking that can affect oral health and have other health risks,” said Brown in a statement. “When vape juice is heated it can potentially damage enamel and irritate soft tissue. As the ingredients tend to be thick and sticky, vapers may be at a higher risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease.”
