First Countrywide Data Shows COVID19 Shots Are Over 90 Percent Effective In Averting Deaths Linked To Delta Variant

October 27, 2021 by Steven Burnett Leave a Comment

Health experts in the UK have come up with countrywide data on COVID19 vaccination and the rate of fatality due to the disease. The data has shown that COVID19 shots are more than 90 percent efficient at preventing deaths that are caused by the delta variant. Research has found that the COVID19 shot developed by Pfizer and BioNTech is 90 percent effective and the shot created by Oxford University and AstraZeneca is around 91 percent efficient in averting deaths caused by the delta variant among people who have been vaccinated with two doses of the shots. The authors of the study have used the data from the Scotland-wide EAVE II COVID19 Surveillance Platform. This is the first research that has shown how efficient COVID19 shots are in averting deaths that are led by the delta strain across the country. The delta variant has become quite dominant in the United Kingdom now and across many nations in the world.

Health experts who have been involved in the study have looked at the health data of 5.4 million people living in Scotland from 1 April to 27 September 2021. Experts have said that PCR tests that have been conducted in the community have shown that nearly 115000 people have been diagnosed with COVID19 during the tenure of the study. There have been nearly 201 people who have lost their lives due to viral infection. As per the findings of the study, Moderna COVID19 shot as well is accessible in Scotland. Experts have said that nobody who has taken two doses of the shot has died due to the disease. Consecutively, they have not been able to predict the effectiveness of Moderna shot in averting deaths that are linked to the delta variant. The authors of the study have recorded COVID19 as a cause of death in death certificates if anyone has died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID19 through PCR test.

The study has been done by research teams of health experts from the Universities of Edinburgh and Strathclyde and Public Health Scotland. They have observed a data set that has been a part of the EAVE II project. The EAVE II project contains anonymized linked patient data to evaluate the pandemic and the vaccine rollout programs in real-time. The authors of the study have said that the study needs to be repeated in other nations across the world and various settings to elevate the confidence in preliminary findings. They have said that the study needs to be conducted in other countries with long-term follow-up post-completion of the vaccination regime. Health experts have said that due to the observational nature of the research, the data regarding the efficacy of COVID19 shots should be construed with caution. They have said that it is not feasible to make a direct comparison between both shots. The lead author of the EAVE II study, professor Aziz Sheikh has said that the findings have reassured that COVID19 shots do provide high immunity to protect people from dying soon after they take the second dose of shots as the delta variant has become quite dominant across many other countries around the world. He has said that the delta variant is more transmittable as compared to any other strains that are circulating in the UK and poses a greater risk of hospitalization and death. Dr. Aziz Sheikh is the chief of the University of Edinburgh’s Usher Institute as well. He has advised people to complete their vaccine regime as soon as possible to gain maximum protection from the dreaded virus as findings have clearly shown the benefits of vaccination.

Dr. Chris Robertson who is a professor at the University of Strathclyde and Public Health Scotland has said that the findings of the study show the value of conducting studies on daily health care data that are available in near real-time. The study has been funded by the Medical Research Council, UK Research and Innovation Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, the National Institute for Health Research and Health Data Research UK (HDR UK). The Scottish government as well as supported the study. The UKRI COVID19 National Core Studies Data and Connectivity Program that has been launched by HDR UK and Scottish Government Director-General Health and Social Care well have backed the study. Italian research as well has found that people who are immunized against COVID19 are highly unlikely to lose their lives to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This study has found that people who are very old or already suffering from certain underlying health issues might die due to the disease even after being fully vaccinated. The study that has been led by the National Health Institute (ISS) has analyzed regular ISS reports on deaths caused by COVID19. The authors of the study have found that the average age of people who have lost their lives even after getting the vaccine has been 85 years. These people have been dealing with at least five underlying health issues already on average.

The average age of people who have died due to COVID19 without getting the shots has been 78 and these people have been suffering from at least four underlying health conditions. The majority of people who have succumbed to COVID19 after taking the vaccine have been dealing with heart issues, cancer, and dementia. The authors of the study have looked at the health records of 671 unvaccinated deaths and 171 deaths of immunized people from 1 February 2021 to 5 October 2021. As per the data, during the tenure of the study, nearly 38096 people have lost their lives to COVID19 in Italy. Experts have said that out of these dead people, around 33620 people have not taken vaccines, about 1440 people have been fully immunized, and nearly 2130 people have been given only one dose of COVID19 shots. The country has immunized above 80 percent of its population above 12 years earlier this month. The Italian government has indicated that the country has reached a threshold that will offer a major extent of protection from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Despite vaccinating 80 percent of its people, the country has made COVID19 passes compulsory for all workers in a test case for Europe. However, the decision of the government has sparked violent protests in multiple cities of the country including the capital city of Rome.
