The affordable electric vehicle market is getting more crowded and competitive. The competition is set to rise as Nissan has unveiled its all-electric 2022 Leaf with more standard features. On top of that, the company has slashed its price across the board – making it the most affordable electric vehicle in America. The Japanese automaker has slashed the prices by around USD 4,200 in comparison to the same models last year. A leaf is Nissan’s one of the longest-running electric vehicle models in the United States. It was introduced in the year 2010. Also, Leaf is the only battery electric vehicle (BEV) for sale. However, it has been the best vehicle in the category for Nissan for years until Tesla launched the Model 3.
According to the company’s US website, the most basic model would cost USD 27,400. This is before any taxes, destination fees, title, or handling fees. This makes the vehicle around USD 1,500 cheaper in comparison to the starting price range of MINI Electric, which was previously the cheapest EV in the country. The company has priced the 2020 Leaf aggressively and as a result, it is cheaper than its own model of last year. In 2021, the same model was being sold at USD 31,000. There are various variants of the 2022 Nissan Leaf and not all of them start below USD 30,000.
It is pertinent to mention that the company has launched the 2022 Leaf at a time when it is very close deliver another electric vehicle to the public. The plan to launch EV was apparently scuttled after former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn was ousted. Nissan does have plans for a second EV and it recently discussed some details about the electric crossover. The company had said that the crossover will be built at its new facility in the United Kingdom. Though Nissan is planning to launch more EVs, the company’s clear focus, for now, remains Leaf.
