Over 2 Million Dehumidifiers Sold At Prominent Retailers Like Costco, Walmart Recalled For Fire and Burn Risk

August 13, 2021 by arya Riley Leave a Comment

The heat and humidity make the outdoors almost unbearable in the month of August. Not only this, but it can also make the insides of our homes sticky and uncomfortable. This is when dehumidifiers come in handy. They can help control the indoor climate and can provide you much-needed relief. So buying a dehumidifier is a smart move. But it must be noted that just like other household appliances, they too need regular care and obviously don’t last forever. On top of that, the Consumer Product Safety Commission or CPSC has announced that around two million dehumidifiers sold across several retailers including Costco, Walmart, Menards, and others are being recalled.

The recalled dehumidifiers were sold in the price range of USD 120 to USD 430 each. All of them were sold from February 2009 to mid-2017. The recall has been ordered because these dehumidifiers can overheat and catch fire. The decision was taken after more than 100 such cases were reported across the country. According to an estimate, these incidents have caused around USD 17 million in property damage. Reports suggest that there are around 380,000 dehumidifiers in Canada and about 25,000 in Mexico that has been recalled.

Most of the dehumidifiers that have been recalled were sold under brand names including Danby, AeonAir, and Friedrich. The recall involves 25-to-74-pint dehumidifiers. Consumers who own these dehumidifiers have been advised to stop using them. They need to contact the company at the earliest. The company would initiate a refund once a customer gets in touch with it. The refund will be done on a pro-rated basis. This means that the refund will totally depend on the age of dehumidifiers. Experts believe that dehumidifiers can last for around 10 years if taken properly care of. Proper care means changing air filters on a regular basis and doing all the required cleaning at a regular interval of time.
