Starlink is being touted to bring a revolution in the internet industry. The company claims that it will provide high-speed internet service. It is a satellite-based internet service. It will provide internet connectivity across the Earth. Starlink is backed by tech billionaire Elon Musk. The satellite internet constellation is operated by private aerospace company SpaceX. Starlink is creating a buzz since it was announced in 2015. The company is setting up a constellation of low-orbit satellites to provide internet connectivity. Musk has said that Starlink will allow data transfer at a high speed. He said that the speed will be close to the speed of light.
Starlink network currently relies on a dish and satellites. Besides, there are ground stations that are at a function to ensure connectivity. According to SpaceX, the ground stations create a hindrance. The company aims to dispose of ground stations. It is said that these stations create obstacles in providing fast data transfers. The delay is caused because these stations take a long time to establish a link with the satellites. Musk said that the company is working on lasers for improving the transmission speed. This will enhance the speed of data transfer by around 40 percent than the speed of optical fibers.
SpaceX said that Starlink’s data transfer speed will reach 180,832 miles every second. When compared to the speed of light in a vacuum, it turns out to be close to 97 percent. Musk said that Starlink will eliminate the need for ground stations. The company, he said, will surely meet its objective, and cutting down ground stations will not affect bandwidths. SpaceX started launching satellites in November 2019. It has launched a beta program for select customers. It charges USD 99 per month. The company has so far launched more than 1,700 satellites. SpaceX claims that Starlink will be able to provide internet connectivity in regions where conventional internet service is limited. SpaceX has plans to launch around 30,000 Starlink satellites.
