Tesla Opts For Wider Release Of Beta Version Of Full Self-Driving Software To Include More Customers

September 14, 2021 by Steven Burnett Leave a Comment

Electric vehicle maker Tesla is determined to take its Full Self-Driving to next level. The company started testing the beta version of the software last year. It offered the software to a selected group. The testing is being done internally. The group also includes some Tesla customers. The testing is being done under the company’s ‘early access program’ for the FSD technology. The company has now announced to expand the software to more customers. Elon Musk informed that Tesla will soon go for a wider release of the Full Self-Driving software. The wider release could take place by September end. The announcement came as the software’s older version was leaked online.

According to Tesla, the FSD version 10 will be made available to customers from September 10. The software will require a few weeks for bug fixing. Once the tuning is completed, a public beta button in the software will become available to more customers. It will take the form of a download button for those who purchased the Full Self-Driving package. Notably, Musk has been battling for an FSD for a long. But the company has failed to provide software that drives a car automatically in a real sense. Tesla’s FSD requires human intervention to avoid mishaps. Tesla even invited criticism from several quarters after its vehicles with the FSD package were involved in accidents.

The FSD package is available for USD 10,000. The company has changed its deadline multiple times when it comes to rolling out Full Self-Driving software that doesn’t require the driver’s intervention. Musk had earlier set 2018 as the deadline for rolling out the FSD. But it didn’t happen and the date was pushed further to 2019. But Tesla missed this deadline too. The FSD program was launched in 2020 to selected customers under its early access program. Tesla at one time even admitted that fully self-driving technology is not feasible. The company said that it does not match engineering reality. Tesla’s FSD is current at Level 2 which is a semi-automated driving system. This needs supervision by a driver.
